In the century and a half since it first opened in 1854, Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery has been writing the history of Montreal on the stones and monuments erected here. A history interspersed with remarkable, sometimes surprising, events. A story you share with five Quebec generations intensely proud of their origins and diversity.
A majestic site, a beautiful landscape, an atmosphere of peace and contemplation... Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery is a tranquil, reassuring space. It’s also an exceptionally vivid record of the history Montreal, and it tells our city’s story in an especially captivating and lively way: a famous name on an obelisk over there...here a family’s guardian angel. Some visitors come here to think and renew their energy. Some come to find their roots. Others come simply for the pleasure of taking a quiet walk through a beautiful, ever-changing natural setting. Welcome to Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery.
Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery was declared a national historic site by the Government of Canada in 1998. In 2003, the cemetery was made part of a classified “historical and natural district” by the Quebec Ministry of Culture and Communications. The Friends of the Cemetery (Les Amis du Cimetière) works to preserve its historic value and interest.
