In the century and a half since it first opened in 1854, Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery has been writing the history of Montreal on the stones and monuments erected here. Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery was declared a national historic site by the Government of Canada in 1998. In 2003, the cemetery was made part of a classified “historical and natural district” by the Quebec Ministry of Culture and Communications. The Friends of the Cemetery (Les Amis du Cimetière) works to preserve its historic value and interest.
